Dog feeders FAQs

What is the benefit of getting an elevated feeder?
Just like humans, some dogs simply don’t have as strong of backs as they used to. This is one of the reasons why many veterinarians recommend these kinds of feeders for those animals who have back problems. In addition to this, these feeders make it easier for your dog to swallow. If his head is always down, swallowing becomes more difficult than it would be if the head were more straight.

My dog always makes a mess of his food. How can I get him to stop this? Those who have linoleum floors know of the frustration that comes when it looks like your dog is more interested in playing floor hockey with his dish than he is in eating the food inside of it. But there is help. A simple fix to the problem would simply be to put rubber grips on the bottom of the bowl to prevent sliding. If this doesn’t seem to work, you may want to turn to elevated dishes instead.

Does the material from which a bowl is made matter?
Yes, it does. Typically the dogs who eat from bowls that are made of stainless steel are much less likely to get sick from random bacteria than those dogs who eat from other kinds of plastic bowls are. In general, it is good to keep your dog away from dishes made of plastics or which have been colored with dyes since this can increase the risk of your dog becoming sick. Also, if you want to keep your dog even safer, remember to wash his dishes often. This will help your dog be much healthier and greatly decrease his risk for becoming sick.

How does an automatic feeder work?
While those who design these feeders could go into immense detail about how power and gravity work together to ensure that these feeders are working properly, that probably isn’t exactly what you want to know. Basically, when your dog is hungry or thirsty, he can eat from these feeders, the more he eats or drinks, the more food and water come out. Your dog can stop eating at any time and when he does, the food and the water will stop coming out as well.
